The Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgery Group at Allegheny General Hospital

To be a candidate for bariatric surgery, patients should meet all of the criteria established by the National Institutes of Health. One of the key criteria is your Body Mass Index (BMI). Your Body Mass Index is a product of height versus weight.

There is a formula that uses these two variables to standardize the extent of obesity. Individuals with a BMI over 40 may qualify for bariatric surgery. Please use the calculator below to determine your BMI.

If your BMI is over 35, and you have a significant number of health problems (ex: diabetes, sleep apnea, etc.) caused by your weight condition, then you may also be a candidate for bariatric surgery.
